Our Adoption Process
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I SUBMIT AN APPLICATION?
Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by a member of our Application Review Team. The reviewer will verify all submitted information for accuracy and completeness. In addition, they will conduct a preliminary assessment to determine whether the initial home conditions and requirements are suitable for the needs of the animal.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Once your application is conditionally approved, here’s what you can expect:
📣 Notification & Next Steps:
-
You will be notified of the conditional approval status.
-
Your application may be shared with the pet’s foster home, who may reach out to discuss:
-
Your home environment
-
Your preferences and lifestyle
-
The pet’s needs and personality
-
-
Note: A phone call does not guarantee a meet-and-greet or adoption.
🐾 Multiple Applications:
-
We often receive multiple applications for the same cat or dog.
-
Our goal is always to find the best fit for both the animal and the adoptive family.
-
This means:
-
Pets are not adopted on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
The first approved applicant may be offered a meet-and-greet if it seems like a good match.
-
However, a later applicant may be selected first for a meet-and-greet if they appear to be a better fit for the pet.
-
A meet-and-greet is not a guarantee of adoption.
-
🔄 If the Pet Isn’t the Right Fit:
-
If we determine the pet you applied for is not a good match for your home or lifestyle:
-
We may suggest another animal that could be a better fit.
-
Or, we can keep your application on file for future opportunities.
-
HOW SOON WILL I HEAR BACK?
We do our best to review all applications as promptly as possible. While we aim to complete the review process within 4–5 days, delays may occur if we are unable to reach references or if the application is incomplete. Missing or inaccurate information can slow down the process and may lead to a denial.
If you have any questions during the process, please feel free to email us at forgetmenot_animalrescue@yahoo.com.
Please keep in mind that we are an all-volunteer organization, and all application reviews are conducted outside of regular work hours. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Meet and Greet Policy
✅ Application Required First
-
Meet & greets are only scheduled after an application has been completed and conditionally approved.
-
We do not have a public facility—all of our pets live in private foster homes.
-
Because of this, scheduling a meet and greet requires coordinating multiple people’s availability.
🐶 Meeting Pets
-
Occasionally, you may have the chance to meet a pet at one of our adoption events.
-
Please note: Pets are not available to go home from events.
-
-
Meet & greets are typically scheduled along with the home visit so we can:
-
Evaluate the environment for suitability.
-
Observe your interactions with the pet.
-
Ensure a good match with all household members, including other pets.
-
🕊️ Decompression Period
-
Even if things go well at the meet and greet, we strongly recommend a minimum 2-week decompression period after welcoming a pet into your home.
-
We will provide detailed guidelines on this if you enter the trial adoption phase.
-
You can also review this information anytime in our Resources & Training section on the website.
🚫 Cancellations or No Response
-
If you cancel a scheduled meet and greet or fail to respond to efforts to schedule one:
-
Your application may be placed on hold.
-
We may proceed with other applicants.
-
WHAT IS AN ADOPTION TRIAL?
At Forget Me Not Animal Rescue, we want to ensure the best match for both our pets and adopters. That’s why we offer a 2-week trial adoption period for every adoption.
What You Need to Know:
-
🕒 Trial Duration: The trial period lasts 14 days to allow time to evaluate compatibility in a home setting.
-
💬 Adjustment Time: Remember, your home is a new and unfamiliar environment to the pet. Please give them time to settle in before:
-
Inviting over guests
-
Taking them on outings
-
-
🧠 Resources Available: We’re here to support you during the trial! We also highly recommend reviewing the training and resource materials on our website.
💰 Deposit & Adoption Fee:
-
A deposit equal to half of the adoption fee is required at the start of the trial.
-
The remaining balance is due on adoption day (at the end of the 2-week trial).
-
⏳ Important: Failure to pay the remaining fee on time may result in the pet being returned to the rescue.
🛑 Why This Policy?
-
Our mission is to find committed, loving homes for our animals.
-
If you're unable to decide within two weeks or fulfill the financial commitment, the pet may be missing out on a home that’s ready now.
-
Our pets are not commodities. They deserve stability and care above all.
If you're unsure about your ability to fully commit, we respectfully ask that you reconsider applying at this time.
Thank you for considering adopting!
ALL money donated to the rescue or collected through adoption fees goes directly to the care of our pets which includes vet care, supplies, administrative supplies, food and training. We do not have any paid staff.
